If you own a he althy and lushly blooming clematis, you may want to propagate it. This can be easily achieved using cuttings, although not all varieties of clematis are suitable for this method of propagation. Read our article about where and how you can be successful.

How do I propagate clematis cuttings?

To propagate clematis cuttings, cut 10cm long shoots with two leaf axils from he althy plants just before or during flowering. Place the cuttings in potting soil, keep them moist and cover them with a cover. Successful rooting is evidenced by new shoots and leaves.

When do you take cuttings of clematis?

Clematis cuttings, regardless of type and variety, root most successfully if you cut them shortly before or during flowering. At this point the plant is full of sap and therefore forms roots particularly easily. Since the different types of clematis bloom at different times, there are different optimal time windows for this type of vegetative propagation. Depending on the type and variety, you can cut cuttings between April and September.

How to cut and root clematis cuttings?

Always only cut cuttings from he althy and richly flowering clematis plants, as the offspring also have the properties of the mother plant. Cut off shoots approximately ten centimeters long with two leaf axils. These should either not have any flowers or you should remove them. Remove all foliage except for the top three to four leaves. Afterwards

  • If possible, place the cuttings individually in small pots with low-nutrient potting soil
  • water it well
  • put a cut-off PET bottle or something similar over it
  • place the pots in a warm and bright place

Now all you have to do is water the young plants regularly (just keep them moist, no waterlogging!) and ventilate the cover every day.

Is a mini greenhouse necessary for rooting the cuttings?

Basically, clematis cuttings root better if you grow them in a mini greenhouse (€239.00 at Amazon). The humidity below the bell is very high so that the young plants do not dry out - this is important because the plant itself cannot absorb moisture due to the lack of roots. Instead of a mini greenhouse, you can also use a plastic bag, a glass jar or a cut-off PET bottle. The only important thing is that the cover does not touch any leaves and that you ventilate for half an hour every day. However, you can also avoid using a mini greenhouse.

Which types of clematis can be propagated by cuttings?

In contrast to propagation by cuttings, which works with all types of clematis, propagation from cuttings is only suitable for small-flowered forms of the clematis. With the large-flowered varieties, the cuttings rarely root. This method is particularly promising for Clematis viticella and Clematis alpina.

When can you plant the clematis cutting?

The clematis cutting usually forms roots within about eight weeks. You can recognize successful rooting when the young plant develops new shoots and leaves. Now it's time to plant them outdoors or move them to a larger pot with nutrient-rich soil.

Tip

Do you absolutely have to use a rooting powder?

It is often advised to dip the cut end of the cutting in rooting powder. This is not absolutely necessary. For better rooting, you can also use self-made willow water.
