Palm lilies are available in different varieties as garden or house plants. One of the best-known varieties is the incorrectly called Yucca palm, Yucca elephantipes, a fast-growing, easy-care houseplant that is, however, not related to palm trees.
How do I properly care for a palm lily?
The ideal palm lily care includes a bright location, moderate watering with calcareous water, loose and sandy soil, avoiding waterlogging and airy conditions in the room without excessive heat. The palm lily can be propagated via offshoots.
The right location
Sunny, warm and dry - that's how most varieties of palm lily like it best. No wonder, since they come from Mexico and the southeastern United States. Other species, such as the candle palm lily, can even tolerate frost down to -18 °C. It is particularly suitable for planting in the garden.
Some species, such as the popular Yucca elephantipes, make excellent houseplants. Here they prefer a bright place, as close as possible to the window. They don't like accumulated heat, so their location should be well ventilated.
The best soil and the right watering
Whether in the garden bed or in the living room - the palm lily prefers loose, sandy and well-drained soil. A flower pot (€21.00 on Amazon) should have a drainage layer. It cannot tolerate waterlogging at all. It also only needs to be watered moderately, although it doesn't mind a slight lime content in the water.
The Multiplication
The propagation of the palm lily is quite easy because it forms offshoots. You can simply remove these and plant them in sandy soil. In summer this can be done in the Feiland, in autumn it is better to use a flower pot and keep the young plants indoors over the winter.
You can also wait until the plants have small roots before planting. Place the cuttings in a glass of water for this time.
Pests of the palm lily
The palm lily is quite robust and is rarely attacked by pests. However, the lily cockerel, a small red beetle, can cause considerable damage by eating leaves. Collect the beetles and rinse your palm lily vigorously with cold water. If you have a yucca as a houseplant, watch out for spider mites and scale insects.
The most important care tips:
- as bright a location as possible
- water moderately
- Avoid waterlogging
- avoid excessive heat in the room
Tips & Tricks
Your palm lily particularly likes to be bright and airy. It only produces flowers after years.
