Is the spider plant suitable for the garden in winter?

The spider plant is not hardy because it originally comes from South Africa and cannot tolerate frost. It is therefore not suitable for planting in the garden all year round, but is an ideal houseplant that requires special care in winter.

The spider plant comes in different sizes and different colors. The wild form is plain green, other species have light central stripes, the color of which ranges from white to cream to yellow. A spider plant with bronze-colored leaves is very decorative and something special. The leaf length varies depending on the species from around 10 cm to an impressive 40 cm. This means you can find the perfect spider plant for almost any location.

How do you care for a spider plant in winter?

At temperatures below 10 °C, the spider plant practically hibernates and stops growing. If it is in an unheated winter garden, make sure that this room remains frost-free. Check the moisture of the soil before watering, as your spider plant needs slightly less water at low temperatures. Fertilize your spider plant only once a month or avoid it altogether.

If your spider plant is in a well-heated living room, then you don't have to treat this plant any differently in winter than in summer. Water and fertilize as usual. Since the room air is often particularly dry in winter due to heating, treat your spider plant to a small spray shower with low-lime, lukewarm water every now and then.

The most important care tips in winter:

  • protect from frost
  • no change in care in the well-heated living room
  • possibly spray occasionally
  • water and fertilize less in the cool winter garden

Tips & Tricks

In the warm living room, treat your spider plant as usual, only in a cool location it needs less water and fertilizer than in the warm summer months.
