Magnolias grow between 30 and 50 centimeters in height and width annually under optimal conditions. Their growth rate is slow and they can reach a height of five to ten meters depending on the variety.

Young magnolias can usually be purchased at affordable prices from specialist retailers or nurseries from a size of approx. 30 to 50 centimeters. Larger and therefore older specimens, on the other hand, often cost a hefty price - hardly surprising when you know about the slow growth of these trees. Even under optimal conditions, most varieties grow between 30 and 50 centimeters annually, not only in height but also in width. However, these plants can grow very large; depending on the variety, heights of between five and ten meters are not uncommon. In good locations, magnolias can reach an age of 100 years or more, as evidenced by many stately specimens in the parks of former mansions.

Most magnolias have a more shrub-like growth habit and branch out close to the ground. Only a few species of magnolia are naturally tree-like.
