The penstemon with its more than 250 species offers you a large selection of different plants, some of which are annual, but some of which are also partially hardy and perennial. The height varies from 10 cm to 3 m.
How should you cut the beard correctly?
When cutting penstemon, you should regularly remove wilted flowers to extend the flowering period. For the vase, cut early in the morning and make sure 2/3 of the flowers are open. Cut back perennial potted plants in autumn, while garden plants are pruned in spring.
Pruning for a long flowering period
Cut off wilted flowers regularly, then the penstemon will not put its power into seed production but into the formation of new buds. This way you can extend its flowering period and enjoy the bell-shaped flowers of the easy-care penstemon until autumn.
Cutting the beard for the vase
Some varieties of penstemon are very suitable as cut flowers for the vase. To ensure that the beard stays in the vase for a long time, it is recommended to cut it early in the morning and shorten the stems a little every two to three days.
Place the vase in a cool and bright place, this also contributes to its longevity. You should also only cut shoots for the vase where 2/3 of the flowers have already opened. Since the beard thread is non-toxic, you don't have to worry about small children or your pets.
Pruning before winter
You don't have to cut back annual varieties of penstemon, they simply die with the first frost. When it comes to perennial varieties, you differentiate between those that you overwinter in the garden bed and those that you give winter quarters.
It is best not to cut back plants that overwinter in the bed until next spring. This way the penstemon can still gather strength and the wilted leaves provide protection from the cold in winter. Container plants are easier to transport and store if they are pruned in late fall.
