When is the best time to plant daffodil bulbs?

Daffodil bulbs should ideally be planted in autumn, between September and October. Dig a 15 cm deep planting hole, loosen the soil and mix in compost. Place the bulb in with the tip facing up, cover it with soil and water heavily.

Planting daffodil bulbs in autumn

The best time to plant daffodil bulbs is in autumn. The bulbs should be in their place in the ground as early as September and by the end of October at the latest.

Missed time: Is there an alternative in spring?

If you don't plant the bulbs until spring, you have to expect that the daffodils won't bloom in the first year. The bulbs need a lot of time to develop roots and grow. Only then will they be ready to emerge on the surface.

In the meantime, store the onions

If you missed the time to plant the bulbs in the fall, you should store the bulbs until spring. Please note the following points:

  • sort out and dispose of rotten, moldy, dried, eaten onions
  • Clean soil from onions if necessary
  • Look for a suitable container e.g. E.g. wooden box, wicker basket, pot
  • Find a suitable storage location e.g. E.g. basement, attic, gazebo
  • plant from February

What planting depth is required for the onions?

Depending on the type of daffodil, the bulbs are different sizes. If you want to be precise: measure the size of the onion. The planting hole should be 2 to 3 times as deep as the diameter of the bulb.

Dig, fill, place – step by step

Once all parameters have been clarified, the onions can be planted:

  • Dig a 15 cm deep planting hole at the location
  • loose up the soil
  • enrich with compost (5 cm)
  • Put onion in (tip up)
  • cover with soil
  • Press soil firmly
  • pour heavily

Don't forget: the onions are highly poisonous

With your thoughts somewhere else? This shouldn't happen when planting the onions. Daffodil bulbs are extremely poisonous to humans and animals. It is therefore advisable to wear gloves when sitting or to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

Tips & Tricks

Anyone who added compost to the soil when planting the bulbs in the fall will benefit in the spring. On the one hand, fertilization in spring is saved. On the other hand, the daffodils sprout happily and bloom excellently.
