Primroses mean the beginning of spring for many plant lovers. Their flowers shine in bright colors and are extremely persistent if the location conditions are good and they are well cared for. But when do primroses bloom and how can you extend their flowering period?
When do primroses bloom and how do you extend their flowering period?
Primroses bloom from December to April depending on the type and herald the start of spring. To extend their flowering period, you can fertilize every two weeks, water regularly, spray leaves and remove wilted parts, and provide cool locations.
From when to when does the flowering period extend?
The word primrose comes from Latin and is derived from the term 'primus' meaning 'the first'. This refers to the early blooming period of this flower. The flowers can appear as early as December. Depending on the species, primroses bloom until April.
How to extend the flowering period?
The following measures lead to a longer flowering period:
- fertilize every 2 weeks (rich in phosphorus)
- water regularly, keep the soil moist
- Spray leaves with water
- Cut off the faded flowers
- remove wilted leaves
- in a cool location (5 to 15 °C)
- Protect flowers from direct sunlight
Do not dispose of after flowering, plant out instead
When the primroses have faded - which is usually the case in April - they do not necessarily have to be disposed of. The well-known and widespread cushion primroses, for example, can be planted in the garden. Other types of primroses can be repotted and placed in a cool place.
If you decide to plant out, you have the advantage that the primroses will bloom again next year and can even multiply. You do not need to cut back the plants before planting them out. Only old flowers and wilted leaves are removed.
Tips & Tricks
If you plant your primroses after they have bloomed in April and choose a shady location with a moist substrate, you have the chance of a second flowering of your primroses in summer.
