The delphinium (also known as delphinium), a mostly blue-flowering perennial, has become an integral part of many gardens. The plant, which grows to a height of between 1.20 and 1.50 meters, has been impressing for centuries with its abundance of flowers.
Which location is best for delphiniums?
The best location for delphiniums (Delphinium) is in full sun, with shady roots and enough space for the perennial, which can grow up to 1.50 meters high. The soil should be moist, loose, rich in humus and nutrients, without direct competition from plants within a meter radius.
The sunnier the better
The sunnier the delphinium is, the better it develops - and of course the more beautifully it blooms. The perennial feels most comfortable in a location with full sun and thanks for a location with a magnificent abundance of flowers. If necessary, the delphinium will accept a partially shaded or light shaded spot, but it will not be able to show off its full beauty here and will also be more susceptible to diseases such as mildew, etc. But even if the delphinium loves the sun, its “feet” (i.e. its roots) should still be in as much shade as possible to avoid drying out.
Dark spur needs a lot of space
Of course, it would be obvious to provide shade for the large perennial with lower-growing plants or even ground cover. However, you should refrain from doing this because the delphinium does not like direct competition - you should keep a distance of about one meter from the nearest plantings.
Dark spur needs nutrient-rich soil
As much as Delphinium loves the sun, it also detests drought. Therefore, the perennial should be in soil that is as moist as possible - but never waterlogged - and that is ideally loose and rich in humus and therefore nutrients. The location becomes perfect if you mulch the root area to protect it from drying out. Furthermore, the delphinium also feels at home in less optimal garden soils, such as loamy or sandy ones, as long as they have been spread with well-incorporated compost and horn shavings before planting. Horse manure is particularly suitable (€12.00 on Amazon).
Tips & Tricks
Dark spur also thrives wonderfully in the pot, but then needs to be regularly supplied with a good liquid fertilizer.
