Orchids are becoming the most popular houseplants because they boast an abundance of tropical flowers on the windowsill. Of course, the queen of flowers doesn't accept every flower board behind glass. You can find out here which criteria the ideal location for orchids should meet.
Where is the best location for orchids?
The ideal location for orchids offers bright lighting conditions without direct sun at midday, warm temperatures (25°C in summer, at least 18°C in winter), high humidity (60-90%) and is no further than 1 meters from the window. West and east window sills are best.
These general conditions define the ideal location
Before choosing a location for an orchid, please take a look at the light and temperature conditions in the habitat. The majority of flowers thrive as epiphytes in the rainforest. Here they sit high up on the branches of jungle giants, with the dense canopy of leaves softening the strong sun. The better the location on the windowsill simulates these conditions, the more opulent the flowers:
- Bright location without direct sun at midday
- In rooms no further than 1 meter from the window
- Warm temperatures in summer around 25 degrees, in winter not below 18 degrees Celsius
- High humidity of 60 to 90 percent
The west and east window sills are therefore perfect for floral displays. If a curtain or awning blocks the midday sun in summer, the south-facing window sill can also be considered. To offer orchids tropical humidity, we recommend a bright window seat in the bathroom. However, only a few shade-tolerant orchid species are really equipped for a low-light location on the north window.

In the middle of living spaces, your most beautiful orchids will be impressively displayed in a terrarium. Equipped with the right accessories, the typical, warm, humid rainforest climate is simulated here.
