Honey cherries do not bear cherries, as the name suggests, but berries. Many of these very decorative berries are poisonous, both to humans and animals. Therefore, find out in advance which types of honeysuckle you can safely plant in the garden.
Are honeysuckles poisonous?
Red honeysuckle berries are poisonous and should not be planted in gardens with children or pets. The blue honeysuckle, on the other hand, is not poisonous, but is usually not tasty. Exception: The edible Mayberry (Blue Honeysuckle Kamtschatika).
The berries of the honeysuckle are often poisonous
The best-known honeysuckle varieties are red honeysuckle and blue honeysuckle.
Red honeysuckle trees are poisonous and should not be planted in gardens where children play or where dogs and cats are present.
It's different with the blue honeysuckle. Their berries are not poisonous. However, most varieties are not suitable for consumption because they have no flavor and are very slimy. An exception is the blue honeysuckle Kamtschatika, also known as Mayberry. Their berries are edible fresh and are also suitable for jams and other berry recipes.
