The hosta can be found not only in gardens, but also on some balconies and terraces. After all, it is different from other perennials when it comes to its location requirements, making it a valuable green element. But what exactly does your location claim look like?
Which location do hostas prefer?
The ideal location for hostas is a shady to moderately semi-shady and protected area. The soil should be moist, nutrient-rich, well-drained and have a high humus content. Blue and variegated varieties should avoid sun exposure, while green-leaved varieties can tolerate a little more sunlight.
A shade-loving perennial
The origin of the hosta lies in forests, on the edges of forests and in moist meadows. Therefore, its location requirements are easy to understand: it wants to be planted in a shady to moderately semi-shady and ideally protected location. The penumbra represents their tolerance zone.
What happens in the sun?
If hostas are exposed to direct sunlight, such as the scorching midday sun, it is not uncommon for their leaves to bleach. This is especially the case with varieties with blue foliage. The blue changes to an unspectacular green.
White and yellow variegated varieties should never be planted in the sun as they lose their color. Only green-leaved species and varieties can tolerate sunlight and retain their appearance if the soil is sufficiently moist.
The soil: moist, nutrient-rich and well-drained
The soil should mimic a good forest floor. The hostas can be planted under conifers or other tall plants and serve as a pretty ground cover, for example. The substrate should have the following properties:
- high nutrient content
- moderate to high humus content
- humid environment
- good drainage
- fresh
Tip
Some hostas grow extremely tall. Make sure they receive adequate shade not only on the ground, but also at height. Sometimes this is completely forgotten.
