Have you decided on sowing as a propagation method for the Turkish poppy? Good decision, because this method has proven itself and is very easy if you know how!
When and how should Turkish poppies be sown?
The optimal time for sowing Turkish poppies is between April and June. Collect seeds from ripe seed pods, scatter them widely and cover them lightly with soil. The germination temperature should be between 15-20 °C, the germination time is approx. 14-21 days.
The right time: Between April and June
A crucial factor for sowing is the right timing. You should sow the seeds between April and early June. Then the best germination conditions prevail, especially the average temperatures are ideal. The seeds have enough time to germinate and develop the first leaves until autumn.
Collecting the seeds
If you don't want to buy the seeds, you can collect them yourself - provided there is already a Turkish poppy. Flowering lasts from May to June/July. The seed capsules are ripe around July/August. When they are dry, you can carefully cut them off, take them home and let the seeds trickle out.
Sow the seeds specifically
Now let’s get to work:
- choose a suitable location and prepare the soil
- Spread seeds widely
- Light germinator: cover lightly with soil or not at all
- wet with water e.g. B. with spray attachment (€27.00 at Amazon)
- optimal germination temperature: 15 to 20 °C
- Average germination time: 14 to 21 days
- single later
Forgetting sowing – self-sowing as a beacon of hope
It's not uncommon to forget to sow on time. If you only think about propagating this perennial in July, don't be disappointed when you realize that it's too late to sow.
The Turkish poppy likes to sow itself. To do this, you should not cut off the flower stems, but wait until the capsules with the seeds have formed. The seeds are blown out through small openings in the capsule wall and carried away by the wind. Here and there they sow themselves.
Tip
Ideally, the Turkish poppy should not be grown in pots. It is a taproot and does not tolerate potting and replanting well.
