In the right location, steppe sage can definitely be described as easy to care for. It loves light and warmth and is in turn loved and desired by insects. With this plant you ensure a rich life in your garden.
How do you properly care for steppe sage?
The steppe sage needs sun, warmth and a location protected from the wind. During the flowering period (June to July) you should water lightly and fertilize twice a year. Pruning increases the chance of a second flowering in autumn.
Planting steppe sage
The ideal planting time for steppe sage is spring. But you can also plant it in autumn. Then make sure that it has enough time to grow well before winter or before the first frost.
Before planting, water the root ball thoroughly. Never place it deeper than it was previously sitting in the ground or in the container. Depending on the species, the distance between the individual plants should be around 30 – 50 cm.
Watering and fertilizing steppe sage
Since steppe sage tolerates occasional drought well, it should only be watered a little during the flowering period. It needs fertilizer twice a year. Give it the first dose before it sprouts in spring, the second after pruning in July.
Propagate steppe sage
Steppe sage is relatively easy to propagate. Either sow it or plant cuttings. Propagation by division is also possible. From March you can sow the steppe sage in the warm and prefer it.
Annual varieties are suitable for propagation through cuttings. Cut a few unwoody shoots about 15 cm long, remove the lower leaves and place the shoots in pots with moist potting soil. Place the pots in a warm and bright place until the shoots have formed roots.
Cutting steppe sage
Cut the steppe sage back radically in July after flowering, then give it the chance of a second flowering in autumn. However, this cut is not vital for the plant. Winter pruning takes place in spring or late autumn so that the plant can sprout again.
The most important things in brief:
- loves sun and warmth
- plant sheltered from the wind
- tolerates drought
- Flowering time usually June to July, sometimes September
- watering during flowering
- fertilize twice a year
Tip
Steppe sage is an excellent bee pasture and also attracts a variety of other insects to your garden.
