Madagascar palms are not palm trees, but are succulents. Side shoots form on the trunk, from which new offshoots can be grown quite easily. This is how you cut and care for offshoots of the Madagascar palm.
How do you propagate a Madagascar palm through cuttings?
To grow offshoots of the Madagascar palm, cut off he althy side shoots in spring, let them dry for a few hours and remove the lower leaves. Place the shoots in moist potting soil, keep them bright and warm and cover them with cling film. Repot after rooting and continue to care for it normally.
The best time to cut cuttings
If you want to cut offshoots from your Madagascar palm, you need a he althy mother plant. It must have formed side shoots.
Short the side shoots during the growth phase. The cuttings root best if you cut them in spring.
Pulling offshoots from cuttings
The side shoots are cut off directly below a node with a sharp knife or scissors. Then let them sit for a few hours so that the cut ends can dry out. Then remove the lower leaves.
Some gardeners recommend simply placing the cuttings in a glass of water. In this case, you just need to be careful when planting the rooted cuttings later. The roots are very delicate and break easily.
Prepare pots with potting soil
- Prepare pots
- Moisten the substrate
- remove lower leaves from cuttings
- Insert drive
- cover with cling film
- set up bright and warm
- Air the film occasionally
Prepare small pots with potting soil. Fine cactus soil (€12.00 at Amazon) is sufficient. Insert the shoots so far into the ground that at least one eye remains at the top.
Place the pots in a place that is as bright and warm as possible. However, direct sun is not favorable.
As soon as the first new leaves appear on the shoots, you can repot the small offshoots. Continue to care for them like adult plants.
Protect your hands
Madagascar palms are not only poisonous in all parts of the plant, they also have a lot of spines on the trunk. These can be very uncomfortable if they penetrate the hand. Simple gloves do not protect against the spikes!
Wrap the trunk of the Madagascar palm with foil wherever you have to touch it if you want to cut off the side shoots.
Only use clean and sharp tools for cutting to avoid transmitting germs.
Tip
In addition to cuttings, Madagascar palms can also be propagated from seeds. You can get seeds from specialist retailers. However, the ambient temperature must be very high for the seeds to germinate.
