Real jasmine does not tolerate frost. For this reason, the wonderfully fragrant ornamental shrub cannot be planted directly in the garden, but is better grown as a houseplant in a pot or as a container plant. You have to keep this in mind when caring for the bucket.
How do you properly care for jasmine in a pot?
To successfully care for jasmine in a pot, you should choose a sufficiently large pot with good drainage, use normal garden soil with expanded clay, pebbles or sand, choose a sunny location without drafts, water and fertilize regularly, and prepare the plant Protect from frost by bringing them indoors in winter.
The right pot
So that the jasmine thrives in the pot, choose a pot that offers enough space for the roots. It should be deep enough that you can easily anchor a trellis in it.
Since jasmine cannot tolerate waterlogging at all, the bucket must have a large drainage hole through which excess irrigation water can drain away.
Normal, slightly nutritious garden soil, which you mix with expanded clay, small pebbles or sand, is sufficient as a plant substrate. This means the soil stays loose and the jasmine is not too moist.
What location does jasmine need in the pot?
From the Ice Saints onwards, jasmine can go outside in a pot. The climbing plant loves it very sunny and bright, but does not tolerate drafts and does not like constant rain.
Good locations for jasmine in pots are:
- South balcony
- Terrace facing west or south
- Bright entrance area in front of the house
In very wet summers, you should have the opportunity to cover the container plant. Jasmine loves full sun, but light shading during midday is recommended.
Properly care for potted plants
Jasmine in a pot must always be watered when the top layer of soil is dry. Do not leave water standing in the saucer. It is best to use rainwater or, if necessary, stale tap water for watering.
Fertilize the container plant every two weeks from spring to autumn with liquid fertilizer.
You should repot the jasmine in a larger pot and fresh soil every three years at the latest.
How to overwinter jasmine in a pot
As soon as it gets too cold outside, the bucket has to be brought into the house. Jasmine is overwintered in a pot in a bright place that should not be warmer than ten degrees. Otherwise the flowering will not occur.
Tip
Only real jasmine can be grown in a bucket. False jasmine or fragrant jasmine are garden shrubs that grow very sprawling and do not have enough space in the pot for the root ball.
