A copper beech hedge is comparatively cheap in stores. The price depends on how many trees you buy, what size they are and how they are delivered. This is how you calculate what price you have to pay for a beech hedge.
How much does a beech hedge cost?
The price for a beech hedge depends on the size of the plants, bare roots or bales, number of beeches, length of the hedge and the place of purchase. In the mail order business you pay around 60 euros for 50 plants, which make 25 meters of hedge. Local nurseries are more expensive, but offer advice and a growing guarantee.
How to calculate the price for the red beech hedge
Several factors play a role in the calculation:
- Size of plants
- Bare root trees or bales
- Number of copper beech trees
- Length of the beech hedge
- Mail order or gardening business
Size of plants and delivery
The bigger the copper beech trees are, the more expensive they are. It will be very inexpensive if you buy bare root trees. European beeches that are delivered in bales are slightly more expensive. Bare-rooted beeches must be watered for several hours in advance. They are generally planted in the fall. It's also better to plant baled goods in autumn, as you don't have to water them as often.
If you buy copper beeches for a hedge in a container, you have to put a lot of money on the table. The trees grow faster and can be planted almost all year round.
How many beeches do you need?
For one meter of hedge length you need to buy two copper beeches. So for 25 meters of beech hedge you need 50 plants.
If you are in a hurry and want a dense hedge quickly, you can also plant three to four copper beeches per meter. This doubles the price of the beech hedge.
However, you have to cut out the excess trees after a few years so that they don't compete with each other for light and nutrients.
Common beeches are cheaper in the mail order business
If you order a copper beech hedge by mail order, you can get away relatively cheaply. For 50 plants you have to pay around 60 euros (as of August 2016).
Common beeches are considerably more expensive at your local specialist nursery. However, you will receive good advice and the garden centers usually offer a growth guarantee. If some beech trees do not grow, you will receive a replacement or a refund.
Tip
If you have time and patience, you can also propagate copper beeches using beechnuts or cuttings. However, it takes at least two years until you can plant the first small plants in the desired location.
