Autumn anemones - these long-lasting perennials delight with their delicate growth, above which the delicate flower shells rise in September. If you like the autumn anemone, you can easily multiply it by dividing it.
How to properly divide an autumn anemone?
To divide the autumn anemone, dig up the rhizome between February and August, remove any coarse clods of soil and divide it into 10 cm pieces with at least 2 shoot buds using a spade, saw or knife. Plant the sections in a sunny to partially shaded location in permeable, nutrient-rich and humus to loamy soil.
Sense and purpose of it all
Division is not only practical for propagating this perennial. There are other reasons why sharing makes sense. These include, among others, the following aspects:
- Perennial has grown too big
- Perennial has become lazy to bloom
- Rejuvenation
- is growing now
- should be transplanted (dividing them will make them grow better)
When should you divide the autumn anemone?
It is best if you divide the autumn anemone in the spring before budding (between February and March). If you missed this period, it is also possible to divide the autumn anemone until August. It is important that it is outside of its prime.
Alternatively, the autumn anemone can be divided in late autumn. But this is less recommended. If you divide them in November, you must assume that the freshly planted sections are sensitive to frost. They should therefore definitely be protected from severe frost with brushwood or compost.
Unearth and share
Before dividing the plant, it is advisable to cut it down to 10 cm above the ground. This way you can handle it better. To do this, take a pair of sharp secateurs (€56.00 on Amazon), gather the old shoots together and cut the bundle through once!
Now take a digging fork or a spade and proceed as follows:
- Lifting/digging roots out of the ground
- removing coarse clods of earth
- divide with spade, saw or knife
- Parts should be around 10 cm tall and have at least 2 shoot buds
Plant in a suitable location
The sections should be planted in a sunny to partially shaded location. Dig a planting hole for each section and loosen the soil well! It is important that the soil is permeable, nutrient-rich and humus to loamy. After planting, just water well!
Tip
Especially in spring and when freshly divided (weakened), autumn anemones are susceptible to snail damage! Feel free to protect the young plants with snail fences or something similar.
