Pruning is not urgently necessary for most types of viburnum. However, it doesn't hurt to get it in shape occasionally. This way you can ensure compact growth and a he althy plant.
When and how often should you prune a viburnum bush?
The viburnum bush should be cut after flowering, usually in June. Cut for the first time when the bush is about four years old and then cut back every 2-3 years. Avoid radical pruning and cut off old, diseased and dry branches as close to the ground as possible.
The best time to cut
It is best to prune your viburnum bush after it has bloomed. For the common viburnum, this is around June. However, pruning is not necessary every year. The first cut should be made on the four-year-old bush. After that, you can prune your viburnum approximately every two years.
The care cut
Do not cut off any new shoots, these are where the easy-care snowball will bloom next year. From the old wood, cut off branches that are standing diagonally and hinder each other's growth, and shorten one or two shoots. Of course, dry and diseased branches should always be removed. Always cut as close to the ground as possible.
One special feature needs to be taken into account when pruning the wrinkle-leaved viburnum. It is hairy on the underside of the leaves and these small hairs can cause allergic reactions or breathing problems. Therefore, allergy sufferers and sensitive people should wear appropriate protection when cutting plants. Safety glasses and a respirator mask are recommended.
Radical pruning
You should avoid radical pruning if possible, because then your viburnum bush will not bloom the following year. However, if it is necessary, for example in the event of a severe pest infestation, if it is very out of shape or if the garden is being redesigned, then give it a long period of recovery and some fertilizer.
