Hyacinths in pots bring spring into the house. From November to March you can buy inexpensive pre-grown plants in stores. This is how you properly care for the spring bloomers so that you can enjoy the fragrant flowers for a long time.
How do you care for hyacinths in a pot?
Care for hyacinths in pots by watering them regularly, avoiding waterlogging and cutting off spent flowers. After flowering, keep the plant cool and dry, water less and store at 0-6 degrees for at least eight weeks before allowing it to bloom again.
Buy hyacinth in a pot
When purchasing, make sure the plant is as compact as possible. The flower bulb should poke out slightly at the top. If it's nice and big and firm, you can grab it.
Take the plant out of the packaging immediately. Keep them cool and bright until flowers appear. Then the hyacinth can tolerate slightly higher temperatures.
How to care for the hyacinth in the pot
Before and during flowering, you must water the plant regularly, always when the top layer of soil is dry. Prevent waterlogging. You do not need to fertilize freshly purchased hyacinths. Cut off spent flowers.
Some hyacinths grow very large inflorescences with many small flowers. They tilt slightly to the side, causing the pot to tip over. Ensure stability and, if necessary, tie the flower stems to small plant supports (€16.00 on Amazon).

After the flowering period there is a long rest period in which the flower bulb recharges its batteries for the next year. Place the pot in a cool corner where it will not disturb you. Water only moderately. Once the leaves turn yellow, stop watering at all. Just leave the plant to its own devices until autumn.
In order for the hyacinth to bloom next year, the pot must be placed at temperatures between 0 and 6 degrees for around eight weeks. This can also be done in the fridge if necessary.
When the first flowers appear, pot the flower bulb in fresh soil and place it in a warmer, bright place.
Tips & Tricks
If it's too much effort for you to keep hyacinths in pots over the winter, plant the flower bulbs in the garden after they've bloomed. Then the hyacinth will bloom again next spring without any care.
