The Cyprus grass is originally native to swampy areas in the tropics and subtropics. It loves the element of water. So why not keep it hydroponics in this country too? Read below how to do it and what you should pay attention to!
Can you grow Cyprus grass hydroponically?
The Cyprus grass can be easily grown hydroponically by placing it in a glass, aquarium or other water-filled container. A bright and warm location is important; regular water changes, liquid fertilizer and, if necessary, pruning are crucial for the care of the plant in this culture.
A glass with water, stones and fertilizer
If you want to keep it simple, you can buy a Cyprus grass or get a cutting from an existing plant. A drinking glass is enough to continue cultivating the Cyprus grass. It should be about 10 to 15 cm high.
Before putting the Cyprus grass in, a few pebbles are left at the bottom of the glass. Now fill in water, add a dash of liquid fertilizer (€9.00 on Amazon) and let the plant migrate. However, culture in a glass is not suitable in the long term. However, it is suitable as a gift or to move the plant to a larger container later.
Other suitable vessels and locations
Aquariums, garden ponds and water jugs are also suitable as vessels for hydroponics. There are no limits to the ideas. What is most important is that the location is in a bright and warm location. It can also be exposed to direct sun.
What should you pay attention to when caring for it?
Once you have placed your Cyprus grass in the garden pond, you do not need to care for it. The pond usually contains enough nutrients so that fertilizer should not be added. There is enough water and cutting is not necessary.
For a culture in a vessel or aquarium, this must be taken into account when caring for it:
- Have the water changed or cleaned regularly
- Administer liquid fertilizer from April to September
- keep it a little cooler in winter
- Cutting is tolerated
Cyprus grass in the garden pond does not survive the turn of the year
If the Cyprus grass is outside in the garden pond, it will die with the first frost. It is not frost resistant. But you can bring it in in the fall and overwinter indoors frost-free. This can be done e.g. B. serve as an aquarium.
Tip
For culture in a garden pond, it should be noted that the location should be in a shallow water zone (5 to 10 cm). Otherwise there is a risk of rot.
