When and how should you plant ranunculus?

Ranunculus is best planted in spring between March and April by placing the bulbs in holes 5-6 cm deep, spacing them 10-15 cm apart and only watering when the plants sprout. They grow well in partially shaded locations and usually bloom from mid-June to the end of July.

When do you plant the onions?

The ideal period to plant the bulbs or tubers of ranunculus is between March and April. It is important that the ground is no longer frozen. You can usually easily get the tubers commercially in spring.

How are the bulbs planted?

Planting the bulbs is easy:

  • Place in lukewarm water for a few hours
  • Prepare the pot or bed with soil
  • dig a hole 5 to 6 cm deep
  • Place the tuber in the hole with the roots facing down, cover with soil and press down
  • Distance between individual tubers: 10 to 15 cm
  • only water when the plants sprout from the soil

What location do ranunculus need?

Ranunculus are content with many locations. They can thrive in both sun and shade. Basically, you should prefer a partially shaded location.

These perennials do well in the blazing sun. But the direct midday sun weakens them. You want a cool, damp place in a sheltered location to grow. Whether in a bucket, pot, balcony box or directly outdoors - the choice is yours!

Can you also sow the plant?

If you have harvested the seeds after the flowering period, you can of course also sow the ranunculus! Sowing should best be done between September and October. To ensure the survival of the newly hatched plants, it is advisable to put them in pots and overwinter in them in a cool but frost-free place over the winter.

Which plant neighbors are suitable?

Ranunculus look good both on its own and with other plants. You can also benefit from their shading properties. The following are well suited as plant neighbors:
