The ranunculus is not only a bedding and garden plant, but also a popular pot plant! Anyone who doesn't have their own garden can cultivate this flowering plant in a pot on the balcony, terrace or even within their own four walls. The demands are low. But what should you pay attention to?

How do I plant and care for ranunculus in a pot?

Ranunculus in a pot requires a planter with a diameter of 15-20 cm and a depth of at least 10 cm. Choose a sunny to shady location, soak the onion in water for 4-6 hours and then cover it with 5 cm of soil.

The size of the planter

Whether stone, terracotta, plastic or another material – ranunculus can be cultivated in all kinds of pots and buckets (€79.00 at Amazon). It is best to choose a container that is not too large. These plants don't need a lot of space. They die every year in the fall and sprout again from the bulb in the spring. They do not increase in size with age.

Usually pots with a diameter of 15 to 20 cm are sufficient. If you grow the ranunculus from seeds, a 10 cm wide pot is sufficient after pricking out. Repot the plant later. The depth of the vessel should be at least 10 cm.

Put the onion in the pot/bucket

The peculiar-looking ranunculus bulb is placed in the pot as follows:

  • Soak onion in water for 4 to 6 hours
  • Fill the pot halfway with soil
  • ensure good drainage
  • Place the onion on the ground with the feet facing down
  • cover with an approximately 5 cm thick layer of soil
  • keep moist

Find a location

Locations both in the apartment and outside the apartment, such as on the terrace, are suitable for ranunculus. It is important that you place this plant in a place where there is no direct sun.

Sunny to shady locations in a location protected from rain and wind are better. Also make sure the location is out of the reach of small children and pets (ranunculus is poisonous)! Then all that's missing is the right care and the plant will really blossom

Tip

Repotting into larger containers is usually not necessary as the ranunculus does not become wider or larger. It should only be placed in fresh potting soil every year.
