You don't necessarily have to plant a hosta in the garden. Such a magnificent plant can also be placed in a pot, for example on the balcony, terrace or roof terrace. But what is unavoidable, sensible and to be avoided when cultivating containers?
How do I properly care for hostas in the pot?
Funcas in pots are suitable for shady locations and require good drainage, regular watering and occasional fertilizing. Prepare for winter in autumn by removing old leaves, insulating the container and placing it against the wall of the house.
Suitable locations for the container plant
Funkas are the ideal choice if you want to beautify a shady balcony, a cool terrace, a dreary house entrance or sections of stairs. Unlike most other perennials, they prefer to grow in shade to partial shade. The humidity can be high. It is generally not advisable to use full sun locations for container cultivation.
Which varieties are suitable for pot cultivation?
In general, all hosta varieties can be planted in pots. Before buying and planting, find out how big the respective variety can grow and choose the bucket or clay pot depending on this. A rather small variety that can tolerate some sun due to its light green-yellow foliage is the Hosta 'Golden Tiara'.
Casting plays the main role
Not much care is necessary. But watering is crucial. When planting, ensure good drainage in the pot! Hostas need to be watered abundantly and regularly. They do not tolerate dry substrate. Water the soil as soon as the top layer of soil has dried.
Fertilizing – second place
Fertilizing plays a secondary role compared to watering, which is essential for survival. It is sufficient if you fertilize your hosta every 2 to 4 weeks between April and September. For this you can use a liquid fertilizer (€24.00 on Amazon), slow-release fertilizer or even horn meal.
Winterize in the fall
Honas in pots should be overwintered. How to do it below:
- October: remove old leaves
- Wrap the planter with fleece or jute or coconut mat
- put on the house wall
- remove the protective layer from the end of February
- February/March: Repot every 2 years and divide every 3 to 4 years
- Share to multiply
Tip
You should keep this wisdom in mind when choosing the variety: the thicker the leaves of the hosta variety, the more liquid is stored (and required) and the better it tolerates sunlight.
