How do you properly care for noble roses?

Noble roses need fertilizer twice a year, ideally in March and the end of May. In addition, fertilization can be carried out at the end of July to support subsequent flowering. Watering is only necessary when it is dry. Diseased plant parts should be removed and correct pruning applied.

What is the best way to fertilize roses?

Noble roses should be fertilized twice a year. A third fertilizer application is not necessary, but it is not harmful either. However, it should not be done too late. This is important because otherwise the branches cannot woody properly and can therefore suffer from frostbite in winter.

The best way to administer the many nutrients that the noble roses need is:

  • fertilize with compost in March (rake lightly)
  • End of May e.g. E.g. fertilize with special rose fertilizer
  • if applicable Fertilize again at the end of July to encourage rebloom

Do you have to water roses?

Noble roses, like other types of roses, do not require a lot of water. They have extremely deep roots and are therefore not constantly dependent on water from above. Roses should only be watered when it is dry and hot in summer. Watering twice a week is sufficient during such periods. But be careful: never water the leaves! This increases the risk of illness.

How do you recognize a disease infestation?

Noble roses are considered relatively susceptible to disease, depending on the variety. How to recognize the most common fungal infections:

  • Mildew: whitish coating on the upper side of the leaf
  • Star sooty mold: brown to black-violet spots on the underside of the leaves
  • Rose rust: yellow spores on the underside of the leaves, orange to brown spots on the upper side of the leaves

How do you deal with sick plants?

If the roses are diseased, no amount of nurturing or caring for them will help. The affected parts must be removed! Take a pair of sharp rose scissors (€25.00 on Amazon) and cut off all diseased parts of the plant. Do not dispose of these in the compost heap, but in the household waste!

How do you cut roses correctly?

Noble roses should be pruned every year. Best time: When the first flower buds become visible. Then the noble roses are cut back to 20 to 40 cm. In addition, in summer you should regularly cut off the spent flowers down to below the underlying leaf.

Tip

Modern hybrid rose varieties are generally less susceptible to disease. These include, for example, the varieties 'Nostalgie' and 'Solero'.
