A whole sea of water lily flowers that vividly decorate the entire pond - this is what many gardeners dream of. You put the greatest effort into planting and yet: the water lilies don't want to bloom. What could be the reason?
Why isn't my water lily blooming?
If a water lily does not bloom, this may be due to close planting distance, diseases, pests, location, depth of water, lack of nutrients or incorrect overwintering. Optimize location, plant spacing and nutrient supply to promote flowering.
The most common reason: too small a planting distance
The most common reason for missing flowers is that the water lilies are too close together. Either you planted them too closely or they have spread and are now overgrown. The plants quickly crowd each other. So if the surface of the water is full of leaves and it is hardly possible to see into the water, then this can be a cause of flower loss.
The solution to the problem
But what helps now? It's simple: divide the plants. If necessary, you can also remove and dispose of those that have arisen through self-sowing, for example, to make space again.
More reasons why the water lily doesn't bloom
But there are numerous other reasons that can be behind the flowers not appearing. These include, for example, these:
- Diseases (often infested by fungal diseases)
- Pests like the lily pad beetle were at work
- too shady location
- Water depth too shallow
- too deep water
- Nutrient Deficiency
- wintered incorrectly and froze to death
- unsuitable planting depth
Suggestions to ensure abundant flowering
First of all, it depends on the location. Place your water lilies in a place where they can get around 6 hours of sunlight per day. The water surface should be calm. Fountains, fountains, whirlpools etc. are not completely unsuitable and cause water lilies to not want to bloom.
In terms of care, regular division of aquatic plants is important. This should happen approximately every 4 years. It is also important to provide enough nutrients. For example, fertilize the plants from April/May using long-term fertilizer cones (€11.00 on Amazon). They gradually release the nutrients into the water and thus the plants.
Tip
Water lilies often do not bloom for a season after moving. So patience is sometimes required.
