Your noble amaryllis is too good to be discarded after just one blooming season. In fact, the South American flower beauty has a floral temperament that is more than sufficient for several years of cultivation. We'll be happy to explain to you how to encourage your knight's star to bloom every winter.
How do I care for a perennial amaryllis?
To cultivate an amaryllis as a perennial, cut off the withered flowers and main stem after flowering and continue to care for them. Place in partial shade in summer, water and fertilize. Put into dormancy in autumn, then repot in November and stimulate flowering.
Take care of after flowering instead of disposing of it – this is how to do it right
Once an amaryllis has finished its winter flower festival, the mighty bulb is far from thinking about going to rest. Rather, the flowering period flows seamlessly into the summer growth phase. A visible signal is the dense tuft of leaves, which supports the bud formation inside the tuber with nutrients. With this care program you can accompany your Ritterstern he althy and happy through the summer:
- Cut off the withered flowers and the yellowed main stem
- From May, move the knight's star with its leaves to a partially shaded location on the balcony
- Continue to water the plant regularly and fertilize it liquidly every 14 days (€9.00 on Amazon)
This uncomplicated care continues until July. In August, the amaryllis will remain in its location while you gradually reduce the water supply and stop supplying nutrients completely.
In September and October there is floral radio silence
Throughout the fall, your Ritterstern will gather fresh strength for the next flowering season. Ideally, the plant spends its rest in dark quarters at temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Now cut off the completely drawn leaves. The plant does not receive water or fertilizer.
How to stimulate new blooms
The regeneration phase is completed in November. A vital knight's star has now completely rooted its pot, so you can repot the bulb in fresh substrate. The plant then moves to a bright location with warm temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius.
A slightly moist substrate signals to the amaryllis bulb that the time has come for fresh shoots. The amount of water is increased in proportion to the growth of stems and buds. Please only apply the first fertilizer when the leaves are blooming.
Tip
Whatever location an amaryllis is in during its flowering and growth period; Please always remember that the plant is not hardy. If the temperatures fall well below 5 degrees Celsius, any hope for the breathtaking blossoms disappears.
