The sacred bamboo, also known as the heavenly bamboo, does not require much care as long as it is in a suitable place. However, it should be watered sufficiently without causing waterlogging and it is not very winter hardy.
How do I properly care for my sky bamboo?
Sky bamboo care includes a sunny location, regular watering with low-lime water, sandy to humus-rich soil and low-lime fertilizer every two weeks. In winter, potted plants should overwinter frost-free and protect planted specimens depending on the variety and climate.
Planting the sky bamboo
The unfortunately poisonous sky bamboo grows in the sun and partial shade. If it gets little light, its flowers suffer. Therefore, plant it in a more sunny place. The soil may be humus to sandy, but not too rich in lime.
The sacred bamboo looks very good as a solitary plant. Give it enough space so that it can fully develop its effect. But the sky bamboo is also very decorative in a pot. Unfortunately it is poisonous.
Water and fertilize the sacred bamboo
The sacred bamboo likes to be watered regularly, but it also doesn't tolerate waterlogging. It's best to water it when the top layer of soil is slightly dry and not too much at once.
Since the sky bamboo doesn't like lime, you should preferably use rainwater for watering, or at least low-lime tap water. The fertilizer should also be as low in lime as possible. Fertilize your Sacred Bamboo approximately every two weeks from spring to fall.
The sky bamboo in winter
The sacred bamboo is only partially hardy. Over a short period of time it can tolerate frost down to around -10 °C, some varieties even down to -15 °C. Therefore, it can only overwinter outdoors in a mild region or protected location.
It is safer to put the sky bamboo in a cold house over the winter. This could be, for example, a greenhouse or an unheated winter garden. This is especially true for a sacred bamboo in a pot or planter.
The best care tips for sky bamboo:
- Location: sun or light shade
- sandy to humus-rich soil
- flowers less luxuriantly in the shade
- soil with as little lime as possible
- water regularly as soon as the top layer of soil has dried
- Use low-lime water or rainwater
- Winter outside only in mild climates
- Overwinter potted plants in the cold house
Tip
The very decorative sky bamboo does not lose its leaves in winter, they remain on the bush in the most beautiful autumn colors.
