The Mandevilla or Dipladenia is actually a very flowering plant. If the flowering isn't as lush as you expected, or if it doesn't bloom at all, there could be various reasons for this.
Why isn't my Dipladenia blooming?
If a Dipladenia does not bloom, this may be due to too little light, incorrect watering, insufficient fertilization or the wrong winter quarters. Optimize the location, fertilize regularly and ensure sufficient watering without waterlogging.
Lack of light, as well as incorrect watering, is a reason for a lack of flowering. Although the Dipladenia does not need a lot of water, it likes to get it regularly. You should also fertilize the Mandevilla at regular intervals, about every two weeks. You can use organic fertilizer, such as mature compost or horn shavings, but also commercially available flower or liquid fertilizer (€18.00 on Amazon).
The wrong winter quarters can also prevent the perennial Dipladenia from blooming. It should neither be too dark, for example in a dark basement, nor too warm. The living room is rarely suitable for overwintering the Dipladenia, as the ideal temperatures for this are between 8 °C and 15 °C.
How can I help my Dipladenia to bloom?
First check the location of your Dipladenia. Does she get enough light there? If this is not the case, move the plant to a brighter place. If you have not fertilized your Dipladenia for more than 14 days, fertilize immediately.
Perhaps you were a little sparing with the water or fertilizer. Then be a little more generous in the future. However, be sure to avoid waterlogging, as your Mandevilla cannot tolerate it at all. If the winter quarters weren't ideal, you probably won't be able to save them this season. Next autumn, choose the winter quarters for your non-hardy Dipladenia more carefully.
The most important things in brief:
- possibly overwintered too warm or too dark - leads to a lack of flowering in the following season
- too little fertilizer
- too little light
- not watered enough
Tip
As a first aid, place your lazy Dipladenia in a bright place and give it some commercial flower fertilizer and enough water.
