The Venus flytrap is undoubtedly one of the most interesting carnivorous plants. If you can't get enough of these interesting carnivores, simply propagate them yourself. It's easier than many hobby gardeners think. This is how propagation works.
How to propagate a Venus flytrap?
To propagate a Venus flytrap, you can either sow seeds from fertilized flowers or divide the plant. The seeds need light to germinate and should be sown in pots with potting soil made from peat and sand. Division takes place in spring by carefully dissecting the plant into several parts.
What methods of propagation are there?
There are two methods you can use to propagate your Venus flytrap yourself. Either grow it from self-harvested or purchased seeds or divide the plant into several parts.
You can get seeds if you pollinate the hermaphrodite flowers with a brush or put the Venus flytrap outside more often in summer. It is then pollinated by insects.
Fertilized flowers form countless small black seeds in capsules. When they are ripe, the capsule opens and seeds are shaken out. They go into the fridge in a paper bag until they are sown in March because Venus flytraps are cold germinators.
Growing Venus flytrap from seeds
- Fill the growing pot with growing soil made from peat and sand

- Sprinkle seeds thinly

- do not cover (light germinator!)
- Plastic hood superior
- Put pots in the sun
It takes up to 20 days for the seeds to germinate. If the seeds are older, it may take longer. Seeds that are too old will no longer germinate.
The surface must never dry out. If necessary, spray the seeds regularly. The plastic hood should be ventilated occasionally to ensure that nothing goes wrong.
After emergence, the plants are pricked out and later placed in individual pots with carnivore soil.
Propagate Venus flytraps by dividing
The best time to propagate Venus flytraps by dividing is early spring, when the plants need to be repotted anyway.
Carefully take the Venus flytrap out of the pot. Tear the plant apart so that enough roots and leaves remain on each part. You can also divide them carefully with a knife or scissors.
Place the cuttings in prepared pots and care for them like adult plants. However, you should only expose them to direct sunlight after a few weeks.
Tip
Always place pots with Venus flytraps in a deep saucer that you fill with water. You should never water directly onto the plant. Use only rainwater or distilled water.
