The Venus flytrap is not necessarily suitable as an introduction to the hobby of carnivore breeding because of the complex care it requires. You should already have some experience with carnivorous plants. Tips and Tricks for Growing Venus Flytraps.
How do I grow a Venus flytrap correctly?
To successfully grow a Venus flytrap, you need a very bright location with constant humidity and temperatures of 20-32 degrees. The plant should be watered with rain, distilled or still mineral water and should not be fed or fertilized.
The right location for the Venus flytrap
Venus fly traps need a location that must meet many requirements:
- constant temperatures of 20 – 32 degrees
- very bright – as sunny as possible
- constant humidity between 60 and 80 percent
A normal flower window is not ideal for growing a Venus flytrap.
Caring for the Venus flytrap is complex
Correct watering plays a major role in care. The plant substrate must never dry out completely. The best way to grow a Venus flytrap is to use the damming method (€11.00 on Amazon). The pot is placed in a high saucer that is filled with one to two centimeters of water.
Only rainwater may be used. Alternatively, water with still mineral water or distilled water. Tap water is too calcareous for Venus flytraps.
Feeding prohibited
Even if the traps tempt you to do so, it is better not to feed the plants. They feed themselves from flying insects and from the plant substrate. Fertilizing Venus flytraps is also unnecessary and tends to harm them.
You should also keep in mind that the traps will only open seven times at most. Then they dry out.
If you do want to feed your Venus flytrap for demonstration purposes, only feed a single live insect that is not too large.
Propagate Venus flytrap
You can propagate the carnivorous plants yourself at home. Cultivation is possible using seeds or dividing the Venus flytrap if it is large enough.
Offshoots can also be grown from leaf cuttings.
Venus flytrap overwintering
In winter, Venus flytraps take a break. This can be recognized by the leaves turning black and by the very small new traps.
The plant now needs to be placed cooler at around 10 to 16 degrees. It needs significantly less moisture in winter.
Tip
Venus flytraps are not pulled because of the flowers, but because of the eye-catching folding traps. You should cut the flowers as soon as possible so that the plant has more strength to form new traps.
