Beautiful roses are not a privilege for garden owners, because many varieties can be cultivated very well on the balcony with the right care and a suitable pot. To ensure that this project is successful, we have put together some important tips for maximum success.
Which roses are suitable for the balcony?
To cultivate roses on the balcony, it is recommended to choose robust, disease-resistant varieties with the ADR seal, which are planted in sufficiently deep pots (from 50 x 50 cm). The optimal location offers 4-5 hours of daily sunlight without excessive heat or waterlogging.
Choosing the right variety
First of all, you should remember that keeping plants in containers is stressful due to the limited space. For this reason, not all rose varieties are suitable for balcony cultivation.
Choose hardy varieties
So that you can enjoy your roses for a long time and you don't have to worry about sick specimens, choose robust and disease-resistant varieties. The rose varieties with the so-called ADR seal are particularly recommended, as they have to undergo years of strict testing and prove their resistance.
Please note the space available
Since space in pots is naturally limited, not all roses are suitable for this type of keeping. Rose varieties that grow very large, such as Rambler, are unsuitable; it is better to use compact shrub or bed roses. Standard stems are ideal for container cultivation and some dwarf roses even feel at home in balcony boxes. With the exception of these, roses always need pots that are sufficiently high, with dimensions of 50 x 50 centimeters being optimal - depending on the growth rate of the respective rose variety. Roses are extremely deep-rooted and need more space in depth than in width.
Location and substrate
If the location is not right, even the most robust rose will not feel comfortable and will bring you little joy. Conversely, the plant will forgive you for small mistakes in care if it just feels comfortable in its place.
The right rose for every location
Roses generally prefer a sunny location, but they cannot tolerate heat or heat accumulation. It should be bright on your balcony - around four to five hours of sun per day is optimal - and quite airy, but the rose will not necessarily appreciate direct sunlight all day long. Balconies facing southwest or southeast are very suitable, while purely south-facing balconies should be shaded at least during midday. But there are also suitable rose varieties for shadier western, eastern and even northern locations.
Tip
Also make sure to buy frost-hardy rose varieties. It is best to plant these in a clay pot, as these are best at keeping out cold temperatures in winter. Nevertheless, good winter protection (€49.00 at Amazon) is essential.
