Pruning terrestrial orchids plays a secondary role in the range of care measures. However, terrestrial orchids cannot survive completely without the use of scissors. These instructions explain how to prune orchids and other garden orchids professionally.
When and how should you cut a terrestrial orchid?
Terrain orchids should be cut off close to the ground before winter when all parts of the plant are completely absorbed. Use freshly sharpened and disinfected cutting tools and remove clippings to prevent disease and pests. No pruning is necessary during the growing season, just plucking out wilted flowers and leaves.
Cleaning up in the middle of the season - this is how it works without cutting
During the flowering and growing season, all types of orchids do not want to be bothered with scissors. Terrestrial orchids are no exception in this regard. The noble plants get rid of their withered flowers and dead leaves on their own. You are only allowed to help a little with your fingers. If a wilted flower simply doesn't want to fall to the ground, pluck it off. If a withered leaf gives way when gently pulled, the garden orchid is happy for you to twist it out.
Pruning and winter protection go hand in hand
Earth orchids only receive their pruning as part of the preparation for the winter season. This applies to both outdoors and windowsills. How to do it right:
- Cut a terrestrial orchid close to the ground before the start of winter
- Do not leave the clippings lying in the bed to protect against diseases and pests
- Do not cut until all parts of the plant have completely retracted
- Use freshly sharpened and carefully disinfected cutting tools
Under the surface of the earth, terrestrial orchids have already created the shoots and buds for the next season at this point. To protect this valuable asset from frost and snow, please spread a layer of mulch made of beech or oak leaves after pruning, secured with needle twigs. After cutting, terrestrial orchids in pots settle in a winter quarters that are not too dark and frost-free.
Tip
The breathtaking lady's slipper orchids (Cypripedium) outdoors can be propagated extra gently by division, without any cutting. To do this, dig up the nest in the fall and clean it thoroughly with a jet of water. Use both hands to bend the root network back and forth until the individual parts come loose on their own. Plant the segments immediately in the ground at the new location.
