In contrast to many other ground cover plants, the cushion phlox forms an almost unbelievable number of individual flowers on the surface of its low plant cushions. In order for the most lush flowers to form, a location that is as sunny and dry as possible should be chosen for the cushion phlox.
When is the flowering time of the cushion phlox?
The flowering period of the cushion phlox usually extends between May and June, with the colorful harbinger of spring available in a variety of flower colors, including white, red, pink and scarlet.
A colorful harbinger of spring
The cushion phlox blooms relatively persistently between May and June in most locations. However, spring is also the best time to plant new specimens of this plant in the garden. With these young plants, due to the irritation caused by transplanting, it can naturally happen that the flowers do not appear in the usual abundance until the second year. When it comes to upholstery phlox, a combination of cultivars blooming in different colors is also attractive; after all, there are numerous varieties with the following flower colors:
- white
- red
- white-pink stripes
- pink
- scarlet
- white with black eye
Even more flowers through targeted cutting
Under certain circumstances, upholstery phlox can also bloom after the actual flowering period. To do this, cut back by about a third of the plant height immediately after flowering in spring.
Tip
If you don't want to go without the delicate phlox flowers later in the year, then in addition to the cushion phlox, you can also cultivate higher-growing phlox varieties such as the meadow phlox or the tall summer phlox.
