Since periwinkle rarely spreads over long distances on its own and was previously used as a medicinal plant, it has often served as an indicator of the location of dilapidated castles in the past. Today, this plant is popular with gardeners despite its potential for danger, as the easy-care ground cover produces decorative flowers.
When is the flowering time of the evergreen?
The flowering period of evergreens, both small (Vinca minor) and large (Vinca major), extends from March to June depending on the location, with the main period of flower formation being between April and May. Evergreen grows well in shady gardens and is suitable as a colorful ground cover and underplanting.
Spring bloomers for the shade
Basically, the small and the equally poisonous large periwinkle bloom between March and June, depending on the location. The main flowering period usually lasts from April to May. During the rest of the year you have a veritable green carpet in your garden, especially with the low-growing Vinca Minor.
Use the evergreen as a flowering underplant
Since the evergreen can be cultivated without any problems in very shady areas of the garden, it is suitable, for example, for underplanting the following garden plants:
- May flower bush
- Rhododendron
- Viburnum Bush
- Outdoor azaleas
The climbing climbing plants of the genus Clematis are also usually grateful for shade in their root area.
Tip
There are different varieties of evergreens with different flower colors; mixed planting of different varieties in one location is particularly decorative.
