Classically, houseplants and other potted plants are planted in soil that has a different composition depending on the type of plant. Some plants prefer humus-rich soil, others prefer nutrient-poor and sandy soil. However, the indoor gardener must always care for his plants carefully and ensure the right amount of water and nutrients. If you tend to forget this or often travel, you can use simpler hydroponics. Even moisture-sensitive plants such as arched hemp can be cared for in one.
How do I plant arched hemp hydroponically?
To convert bow hemp to hydroponics, remove the soil from the plant's roots, place it in an inner pot filled with fine-grain hydroponic substrate, place the water level indicator, and place the inner pot in a planter. Water and fertilize only in the planter.
What is hydroponics and how does it work?
Soil is not absolutely necessary for the he althy growth of plants - light, air, water and nutrients are much more important. The plant, on the other hand, only needs soil so that its roots can find support in it. However, this function can be fulfilled just as well with inorganic materials such as expanded clay balls. This substrate serves as a foundation for the plant, but in some forms of hydroponics it also serves as a water reservoir. However, the regular form of hydroponics provides for this system:
- The plant is in an inner pot filled with suitable granules.
- A water level indicator is also installed in it.
- The inner pot is placed in a planter filled with water.
- You can tell from the water level indicator when it's time to water again.
- We always pour into the planter.
- Only special fertilizers for hydroponics (€9.00 on Amazon) are used for fertilization.
Which substrate is suitable for bow hemp?
Make sure that the substrate is as fine-grained as possible. Since bow hemp has very fine roots, they do not find a good hold in larger balls.
Planting and caring for bow hemp in hydroponics
If you want to convert your arched hemp to hydroponics, it is best to repot the plant in spring.
- Get the bow hemp out of its pot
- and carefully remove all soil.
- The roots must be completely exposed.
- Now place the bare root ball in the inner pot,
- also the water level indicator
- and fill the pot with the hydroponic substrate.
- Make sure that all spaces are filled well.
- To do this, gently tap the pot on the tabletop.
- Now place the inner pot in the planter.
- Ensure that the water level indicator is at maximum “minimum”.
- Only add more water in exceptional situations (e.g. if you are away for a long time).
Tip
Hydroponic plants are only repotted when the pot has become too small. Instead, replace the first one or two centimeters of the substrate every year and wash it under running, clear water.
