Moss is not one of the sprinters in the plant kingdom. To get growth going in the garden, you can help by choosing the right location and a suitable substrate. We explain how to do this here.
How can I speed up the growth of moss?
To make moss grow faster, plant it in low-light, humid locations with temperatures between 15-20 degrees Celsius. Choose moist, lean soil with an acidic pH value of less than 5.5 or use a substrate layer of peat and sand oran inorganic base moistened with liquid leaf compost.
This is how moss grows in motion
Native moss species achieve their optimum in low-light, humid locations at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. In a dry, sunny spot, however, you will wait in vain for the fluffy green carpet to grow quickly. If you also settle moss on one of the following substrates, the rootless spore plant will no longer be so reserved:
- A moist, lean soil with an acidic pH value of less than 5.5
- Ideally a 5-8 cm, slightly compacted substrate layer of peat and sand
- On an inorganic base moistened with liquid leaf compost
Alternatively, you can make a viscous mixture from chopped, washed pieces of moss and buttermilk and spread it on a suitable surface.
