The Flaming Käthchen, often commercially available under the name Kalanchoe, has been enjoying great popularity for several years. The lushly flowering houseplant brings bright colors into the living room and is also easy to care for. Unfortunately, the pretty plant is often thrown away as soon as it has bloomed - but that is not necessary, because with little tricks you can get the plant to bloom in the following years.
How do you care for a faded Flaming Käthchen?
Section: After flowering, cut back the Flaming Käthchen, repot it if necessary and place it in fresh substrate. From November onwards, for six to eight weeks, only provide eight to nine hours of light and temperatures of 10 to 15 °C every day, water less and do not fertilize. Then continue to care for it as normal.
Flaming Käthchen is not a disposable plant
The Kalanchoe is completely wrongly considered a disposable plant; after all, it only blooms for one season and then no longer wants to show off its splendor. However, this is only due to the local lighting conditions, because the Kalanchoe is a so-called short-day plant. These only form new flowers if they are only exposed to a light source for a few hours a day over a period of a few weeks - as a result, a Flaming Cat that has overwintered in a warm and usually brightly lit living room is unlikely to develop any buds.
Care for Flaming Käthchen properly after flowering
So that your Flaming Käthchen will continue to have flowers the following year, you just have to keep the plant in a low light environment for some time. The best way to do this is as follows:
- After flowering, cut the plant back first.
- This measure rejuvenates the plant and ensures the emergence of new, strong shoots.
- If possible, combine the pruning with the repotting.
- Place the Flaming Käthchen in fresh substrate.
- From around November, the plant should not be exposed to a light source for more than eight to nine hours a day.
- This applies to both natural and artificial light.
- Ensure that the plant e.g. B. it is dark from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.
- For example, place a cardboard box or a bucket over it.
- Place it in a windowless room or closet.
- A reduced room temperature of around 10 to 15 °C would also be beneficial.
- Watere significantly less and stop fertilizing.
- This condition should last about six to eight weeks.
- The Flaming Käthchen is then cultivated as normal.
Tip
The clippings resulting from pruning can be used to propagate the plant.
