Overwintering a mimosa is not easy. Although mimosas are perennial plants, they are usually only grown as annuals. But they are easy to propagate, so you can grow new plants every year. This is a guaranteed way to propagate a mimosa.

How to successfully propagate a mimosa?

To propagate a mimosa, you can either cut cuttings from a he althy mother plant and place them in water or potting soil for rooting, or you can purchase seeds from specialist retailers, let them soak in water and sow them in germ-free potting soil.

Propagate mimosas via cuttings or seeds

You can either grow mimosas from cuttings or get seeds to sow them.

Growing from cuttings is not necessarily recommended, as the mimosa does not tolerate being cut well. The mother plant often dies afterwards.

The best time for propagation is early spring. It is not worth propagating a mimosa later in the year as it will have an even harder time surviving the winter.

Simply place the cuttings in a glass of water

To grow a mimosa from cuttings, you need a he althy mother plant. Using a sharp knife, cut one or more cuttings.

Remove the lower leaves and place the shoots in a glass of water. They form roots there quite quickly. As soon as they have reached a length of around three to four centimeters, repot them into a prepared planter. Be careful not to press the delicate roots too hard.

You can also put the cuttings straight into pots with potting soil. The young mimosas are then repotted in standard soil as soon as they show new leaves.

Growing mimosa from seeds

You can find seeds for mimosa in specialist shops. If you have successfully made mimosas bloom yourself, you can also harvest your own seeds.

  • Prepare the cultivation container with substrate
  • Soak seeds in water
  • sow thinly
  • cover lightly with soil
  • keep moderately moist, light and warm

Let the seeds soak in lukewarm water for at least half a day. Then sow them thinly and only cover them lightly with soil.

The seeds must be kept slightly moist. Place the cultivation containers in a warm and bright place. Avoid direct sunlight.

Tip

Be sure to use germ-free potting soil when sowing (€6.00 at Amazon). You can get these from specialist retailers. You can also use normal garden soil, which you sterilize in the oven at around 80 degrees for half an hour.
