Even if this plant is often referred to as such, the yucca is - despite all its external similarities - not a type of palm tree. For this reason, palm care instructions for the yucca (or palm lily, as it is botanically correctly called) are not applicable. Of course, this also applies to the location.
Which location is ideal for a yucca palm?
The ideal location for a yucca palm is a bright, airy and warm place. It prefers light, partially shaded areas and should be carefully acclimated to a location in full sun. Outdoors, the indoor yucca should be positioned in a sheltered and bright place, avoiding the intense midday sun.
Bright and airy is ideal
Yuccas prefer a bright, airy and warm location - regardless of the specific species. Light, partially shaded places are generally better tolerated than full sun. You can also accustom the yucca - especially the forest-hardy species for the garden - to a location in full sun, although you should do this carefully. Brownish spots on the leaves are often an indication of burns. You can notice a lack of light in the Yucca by the leaves drying out from below. This phenomenon often - but not always - occurs in connection with too little moisture.
Outdoor Indoor Yucca: The Right Place
During the warm summer months, the non-frost-hardy indoor yucca also feels comfortable in a bright and sheltered spot in the garden or on the balcony or terrace. Here too, as with the garden yucca, the plant can be placed in a full sun spot - but only after it has become accustomed to it. However, the intense midday sun should be avoided at all costs.
Tip
The garden yucca (for example frost-hardy species such as Yucca gloriosa or Yucca filamentosa) should be as sunny as possible and in sandy, permeable and dry soil. The otherwise easy-care and robust relative of the Yucca elephantipes (giant palm lily), which is often cultivated as a houseplant, cannot tolerate excess moisture at all.
