Yuccas are very fast-growing and reach the ceiling within a few years. The roots also show impressive growth and root through a pot within just two to three years. For this reason, the popular houseplant should be repotted every two to three years if possible - of course in fresh substrate to supply it with nutrients.
Which soil is best for a yucca palm?
For the ideal yucca palm soil, commercial green plant soil should be mixed with a little sand or expanded clay to make it loose and well-drained. Good drainage is important to avoid waterlogging. Special palm soil is not necessary.
Good drainage and permeable soil is important
The yucca has no special requirements when it comes to the type of substrate - the soil should only be rich in nutrients, loose and well-drained. The easiest way is to use commercially available green plant soil (€10.00 on Amazon) and, if necessary, loosen it up with a little sand or expanded clay. Drainage is much more important, as it ensures that excess irrigation water flows away quickly. The yucca doesn't like moisture and especially waterlogging at all. On the other hand, it is completely unnecessary to buy special palm soil - despite its similarity, the yucca is not a type of palm tree.
Tip
Instead of planting the yucca in soil, you can also cultivate it hydroponically. This has the advantage that the substrate does not contain any mold spores or other microorganisms. In addition, hydroponic plants are easier to care for.
