If the pond pump is to be overwintered, there are a few things to consider. You can read in detail in our article which measures are important, when you can let the pond pump run and when you have to dismantle it.
Can I leave my pond pump (€148.00 on Amazon) outside in winter?
A pond pump should be dismantled in winter and stored indoors in a frost-proof manner, unless it is a heated pond (water temperature above 6°C) or the pump is frost-proof and installed in a deep water area. Store the pump in clean water to avoid damage.
Operating a pond pump in winter
Basically, you can run a pond pump (€148.00 on Amazon) in winter if it is a heated pond where the water temperature never drops below 6°C.
This is often the case with koi ponds, for example. Since the fish need warmth to overwinter, such ponds must be heated. At high water temperatures, the pump can run without any problems.
For all other (unheated) ponds, you should switch off the pump. Whether you also need to remove the pump depends on where it is installed. In most cases, however, you will completely dismantle your pond pump and hibernate frost-free in a warm house.
Remove the pump or not?
Basically, you can always leave pumps in the pond if it is ensured that the pond does not freeze up to the pump. If the pump is installed in a shallow water area, you should definitely remove it.
In order to leave a pump outside, it must be confirmed that it is frost-proof by the manufacturer. This doesn't apply to all pumps - if in doubt, it's better to dismantle the pump and store it indoors over the winter.
Store the pump properly
Unlike the pond filter, the pump must under no circumstances be stored dry. You pumps must always be stored in a bucket of clean water. The only exception to this is the outdoor pumps: like the pond filters, they are stored dry. In any case, follow the instructions given by the manufacturer in the operating instructions.
If the pump were to dry out, the impeller in the pump could possibly be damaged. You should be careful of this.
Like the pond filter, the pump should also be cleaned thoroughly before wintering. It is best to refer to the operating instructions for instructions.
Tip
You also need to take some protective measures for the winter at the pond itself. For example, the pond must be effectively protected from dirt and kept free of ice so that fermentation gases that form can escape. You must also remove sensitive plants.
