The blood flower belongs to the amaryllis family. The long, slender shoots and flowers grow from a bulb. What you need to consider when planting the not-so-easy-care blood flower.
How should you plant a blood flower correctly?
To successfully plant a blood flower, choose a sunny to partially shaded location with at least 22 degrees, use loamy, humus-rich, water-permeable substrate, release the tip of the bulb and ensure drainage in the bottom of the pot. Planting time is from March to May.
Which location does the blood flower prefer?
The blood flower likes it sunny to partially shaded. However, in a location behind a window, you should provide some shade during the midday sun. The temperatures at the location should be at least 22 degrees.
In summer you can also put the blood flower outside.
When is the best time to plant?
Plant blood flowers from March to May. Place purchased or divided onions immediately in a pot to prevent them from drying out.
What should the substrate be like?
Compost-based potting soil (€12.00 on Amazon) is ideal. The soil can be loamy and humus. It must be permeable to water so that no waterlogging occurs.
What should you consider when planting?
- Pot not too big
- Tip of the onion must remain free
- Press the substrate carefully
- don't keep it too moist
- keep it bright and warm
Do not plant the blood flower bulb too deep. The tip should just barely poke out of the top of the substrate.
The diameter of the pot should be about five centimeters larger than the onion. Pots that are too large are not suitable. Make sure there is drainage in the bottom of the pot.
When is the flowering time of the blood flower?
The flowering period lasts from August to September. The cooler the location, the longer the blood flower blooms.
How is the blood flower propagated?
The easiest way to propagate the blood flower is by dividing the bulbs, for example when you repot the plant in spring. Over time, the onion forms many sprouting bulbs that can be separated. However, the plant should not be divided too often as it will no longer bloom.
Blood flowers can also be propagated via seeds. To do this you need a bright, warm place and a lot of patience. It takes up to three years for the seeds to produce flowering plants.
Tip
The blood flower does not tolerate frost. In winter, however, it needs a longer period of rest in a cooler environment. If it is not given this break, it will not bloom next year.
