The best way to implement new ideas for your water paradise is to renew the entire garden pond. Renovating from the ground up is also a rejuvenation treatment for the pond plants, which have sometimes been rooted in mud for a long time and their he althy growth has been stunted.
How to renew a garden pond?
To renew a garden pond, you should first evacuate the fish population and plants, drain the pond and remove the mud and the old pond liner. You then design new contours and pond zones, lay out protective fleece and pond liner, attach the edge of the pond and plant the different pond zones.
If care has been neglected for a long time or if a garden pond that has now become too small needs to be enlarged, a complete renovation is necessary, which is then usually combined with changes to the size and shape of the entire system. The redesign begins with your garden paradise being drained using a dirty water pump (€65.00 on Amazon) after the fish population and the plants have been evacuated if they are to be used later.
Construction freedom for the new facility
Now the plant remains, the accumulated mud and the old pond liner are removed. It is best to use a sturdy cutter to separate the plastic sheets into several manageable parts, which can then be removed more easily. Now the contours for the new pond system can be determined and marked with a rope. The earthwork then begins with the modeling of the various pond and bank zones. Take a look at our tips for creating a pond.
Line with pond liner
After the edge of the pond has been secured, for example with concrete stones laid in a mortar bed, and secured against slipping, spread an approx. 5 to 10 cm thick layer of sand over the entire pond floor, on which strips of protective fleece are first laid in an overlapping manner. The pond liner is spread out over this and pulled evenly over the edges of the bank. Here is a small overview of the recommended minimum thickness:
Depth of the garden pond | Thickness of polyethylene film (PE) |
---|---|
80cm | 0, 8mm |
0.8 to 1.5 meters | 1mm |
>as 1.5 meters | 1, 5mm |
Depth of the garden pond | Thickness of PVC film |
---|---|
>as 1.5 meters | 1mm |
>1.5 meters | 1, 5mm |
Depth of the garden pond | Strength pond fleece |
---|---|
>as 2 meters | 300 g/m2 |
2 to 3 meters | 500 g/m2 |
>3 meters | 1000 g/m2 |
Zone design and edge planting
After the garden pond has now been completely renovated, the planting takes place, where you can give free rein to your design ideas for the pond zones of different heights. Water-purifying plants in baskets filled with gravel have proven to be effective and can be easily secured to prevent them from slipping later. Finally, cover the pond liner that is still visible at the edges with natural stones or pebbles in different thicknesses.
Tip
If possible, use some of the old water for the initial filling of the new pond. Only fresh water from the tap can cause shock to fish and is unhe althy for these sensitive animals.
