Who says you can only grow fresh vegetables in the garden? Instead of in beds, herbs, tomatoes or radishes can also be grown in pots - which don't necessarily have to be on the balcony. As long as bees etc. are not necessary for fruit production, delicious vegetables can also be grown in the living room.

What types of vegetables can you grow in the apartment?

Numerous types of vegetables can be successfully cultivated in the apartment, such as tomatoes, peppers, radishes, carrots, salads, herbs and beans. Make sure there is enough light, regular watering, fertilizing and ventilation for optimal growing conditions.

Suitable vegetables for the apartment

There are many types and varieties of vegetables that thrive and bear fruit even in an apartment climate. Finally, vegetables can also be grown successfully in a greenhouse. Only fruit trees can hardly be cultivated in the living room until they are ready for harvest, as they lack bees and other insects for fertilization. In addition, Mediterranean citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges or tangerines as well as avocados are difficult to keep under room conditions - the care required is immense, and experience has shown that such mini trees feel better in the fresh air.

However, annual vegetables in particular can be grown excellently on the windowsill:

  • many herbs such as parsley, basil, chives, thyme, cress
  • Tomatoes, including the small-fruited varieties and hanging basket tomatoes
  • Trail tomatoes grow in a hanging basket and simply tend downwards
  • Peppers and relatives (e.g. chili, hot peppers)
  • Radish (quick harvest!)
  • Carrots and kohlrabi (in sufficiently deep flower pots or troughs)
  • Zucchini (requires very large planters!)
  • various cut and picked salads, lamb's lettuce and rocket
  • Ginger
  • Allium plants such as onions, garlic, leeks
  • Cucumbers, especially snake cucumbers (they feel better in the greenhouse anyway)
  • Beans (bush beans, runner beans) and peas

Location and care for indoor vegetables

If you want to successfully grow vegetables in your home, you should be aware of three things:

1. Vegetable plants need a lot of light to ripen the fruits. South windows are ideal.

2. The plants need to be watered and fertilized regularly. Use organic vegetable fertilizer.3. Regular ventilation is also very important – as in the greenhouse.

In addition, only a few vegetables can be grown in the apartment all year round. As a rule, yields can only be achieved between March and October; most plants take a break in winter - with a few exceptions, such as many herbs, salads or radishes. However, you can often harvest three or even four times during the growing season.

Tip

It is best to place the pots with the vegetable plants directly in front of a window or a glass door. If the summer is rather rainy and cold (and therefore dark), an additional plant light (€89.00 on Amazon) makes sense.
