Magnificent, blooming primroses that stand in the same location for many years and require little care - which primrose lover doesn't dream of that? To make this wish a reality, here are a few essential tips that should be taken into account when planting primroses.
How should primroses be planted correctly?
To optimally plant primroses, choose a period between the end of April and the end of May, a sunny to partially shaded location and a humus-rich, permeable, slightly acidic soil. Make sure there is a planting distance of at least 10 cm and suitable plant neighbors such as hyacinths, daffodils or ornamental grasses.
What time is ideal for planting?
Primroses can be planted in winter as long as the ground is frost-free. But it is better to plant them in spring after flowering. The ideal period for planting is between the end of April and the end of May.
How is sowing done?
Primroses like to multiply by self-sowing. If you prefer to propagate them yourself, you should sow the seeds between February and April. If you sow seeds by the end of May at the latest, the first flowers can be expected the following year. Primrose seeds are cold and light germinators.
Let's get started: The seeds are placed in coarse-grained sowing soil (€6.00 on Amazon). They must not be covered with earth. If the substrate is kept moist, the seeds will germinate after 2 to 3 weeks. Temperatures between 12 and 15 °C are optimal for the germination process. As soon as the first 4 leaves are visible, the small plants can be pricked out.
Which location is suitable?
Primroses should be planted in a sunny to partially shaded location. It is also important not to expose them to the direct midday sun. There, the risk of them drying out in summer is too high.
What should the soil be like at the location?
If you want to plant the primroses in a pot, normal potting soil is sufficient. In the open field, the subsoil should have the following characteristics:
- easy
- humos
- permeable
- nutritious
- slightly sour
- moderately moist to dry
What planting distance is required and which plant neighbors are suitable?
In order to keep subsequent care to a minimum, a minimum distance of 10 cm should be maintained between the individual primroses when planting. 25 cm is better, although the planting distance should vary depending on the type of primrose. Suitable plant neighbors for primroses include hyacinths, crocuses, daffodils, galanthus, heuchera as well as ferns and ornamental grasses.
Tips & Tricks
Wear gloves when planting primroses. The active ingredient called Primin can otherwise cause skin rashes.
