On common grass trimmer models, the entire spool does not have to be replaced when the line is used up. As a rule, only a new mowing line is wound up. These instructions will familiarize you with the correct procedure from preparation to skillful threading into the bobbin.
How do you wind the line on a grass trimmer?
Answer: Cut a suitable mowing line, fold it in the middle, hook it into the spool and follow the arrows on the spool. Thread the thread into the grooves, secure the ends in the slots, reinsert the spool, ring and spring and pass the thread ends through the holes on the outside.
Material and preparation
To ensure that the freshly wound thread does not break or get stuck the first time you use it, read the correct thickness in the operating instructions before purchasing. If you have the new mowing line (€14.00 on Amazon) at hand, prepare for the replacement in these steps:
- Soak cutting line in water for 24 hours
- Disconnect the grass trimmer from the power, remove the battery or pull the spark plug cable
- Open the mowing head by pressing two side snap latches
- Remove the coil, spring and ring
- Pull out old thread and dispose of it
- Put the spring and ring aside so that they are within easy reach
You can read how long a new mowing line should be in the operating instructions for your grass trimmer. As a rule, you can get by with 200 cm.
Threading the cutting line correctly into the spool - How to do it
Bind the cut grass trimmer line in the middle so that one end is about 10 cm longer. Hook the thread into the roll at the bend. Please place the longer side in the bottom groove. An arrow on the thread spool shows in which direction you should thread the double thread. Each half of the thread remains in its groove. The two wires must not cross each other.
There are two slots on the coil for fixing the two ends. Insert each end of the thread into a slit, leaving about 10 to 15 cm overhanging. Now you can reassemble the thread spool with the ring and spring. As you insert the spool into the head, simultaneously push the thread ends through the corresponding holes on the outside. Finally, put the lid on.
Tip
If there is still plenty of thread on the spool, you can save yourself the hassle of winding up a new cutting thread. If the grass trimmer line does not follow, briefly tap the mowing head on the ground while the engine is running. The thread brake releases and pushes a new piece of thread forward.
