In every garden there are corners and edges that a lawn mower cannot reach. This is where the thin cutting line of a grass trimmer comes in handy to cut off every last blade of grass. It's annoying when the thread doesn't come out of the mowing head. This guide briefly summarizes the most common causes of this problem with tips for solving them.
Why doesn't the string on the grass trimmer follow?
If the string on the grass trimmer doesn't keep up, this could be due to the wrong winding direction, a stuck thread, a thread that is too thick or a damaged spool. Check these points and, if necessary, choose a round, smooth thread for better feeding.
How does a string mower head actually work?
Lawn trimmers are equipped with a mowing head with an integrated coil. A cutting line is wound on this spool, the two ends of which protrude from the line cutting head. As the spool rotates rapidly, both ends of the thread cut off grass and light bushes.
The longer and more intensively you use your grass trimmer, the more the cutting threads wear out. If the thread becomes so short that it no longer cuts off the blades of grass, the thread brake in the mowing head must be released. To ensure that the integrated automatic system feeds new thread, tap the running grass trimmer once on the ground. The thread brake briefly releases the double thread while the centrifugal force pulls a piece of it forward. An overhang cutting edge shortens a piece of thread that is too long to the correct length.
Tapping doesn't allow the thread to follow - What to do?
If the spool does not feed the thread after tapping the mowing head, the automatic system is blocked. We have put together the most common causes with tips for solving the problem for you here:
- Thread wound in the wrong direction: unwind and wind in the opposite direction
- Thread is stuck: unwind, clean spool and thread, wind up a little looser
- Thread too thick: read the correct thickness in the operating instructions and replace the mowing line
- Coil damaged: Buy a model-compatible new coil and insert it
Mowing threads made of abrasive, rough material and with three to six edges are particularly durable. They don't tear as quickly even when they come into contact with stones. All resistance is pointless if the thread gets stuck in the spool due to its angular shape and does not follow. Therefore, switch to a round, smooth thread that the automatic system can feed better.
Tip
If the thread on the grass trimmer constantly breaks, the material has lost its elasticity. Did you just buy the mowing line or have you stored it for a long time? Then place the wire or the entire coil in water for 24 to 48 hours before the next use.
