The bed border with boxwood can be called traditional. You may know this from old monastery or mansion gardens. Various green or other alternatives are certainly less well known, because an evergreen border does not always have to be made of boxwood.
What alternatives to bordering beds with boxwood are there?
Evergreen plants such as barberry, Ilex, cherry laurel and thuja as well as herbs such as chives, lemon balm, mint, rosemary, boar's rue, sage, lavender and thyme are suitable as an alternative to boxwood borders. Evergreen plants provide year-round ornamentation, while herbs are decorative and useful.
Especially in gardens where some box trees have already fallen victim to the box tree borer, an alternative to the popular box tree should be considered. However, this doesn't have to be a bed border made of wood or stone.
Unlike a concrete bed border, you can change a plant bed border at any time and without too much effort. It appears less massive and, with a good selection of plants, fits harmoniously into your garden. You can choose between evergreen and deciduous plants, but various herbs are also suitable for this purpose.
Bed border with evergreen plants
The advantage of a bed border with evergreen plants is of course their foliage, which decorates your garden even in winter. For example, thuja, ilex, barberry or cherry laurel can be used as a bed border. However, these bezels are not necessarily the lowest. They are therefore particularly suitable for slightly larger beds.
A bed border made of evergreen plants can usually be easily cut into shape, which is also important for a harmonious appearance. You should definitely prune regularly. Do not plant the individual plants too far apart so that a dense hedge can grow relatively quickly. Perhaps one or two flowering plants in the middle of the hedge will loosen things up.

Tip
So that your garden doesn't appear too busy, you shouldn't use too many different types of plants as a bed border. However, a little variety isn't wrong.
