Flower beds look attractive when they are clearly surrounded by a border. However, these bed borders are not only intended to make a neat impression, but in many cases have a practical use. This is the case, for example, with flower beds in the middle of a lawn. Here the grass must be prevented from overgrowing the flower bed. Stone bed borders are attractive in both natural and modern gardens, and they also score points for their durability.
How to border a flower bed with stones?
A flower bed can be bordered with stones by building a low dry stone wall or palisade made of natural stones, concrete blocks or paving stones. These provide an attractive border, prevent grass from overgrowing and create clear boundaries in the garden.
Ideas for stone surrounds
You can use a wide variety of stones for stone bed borders: natural stones (e.g. bas alt, sandstone, granite), concrete stones, paving stones or even clinker bricks result in uncomplicated solutions. The borders can be slightly raised or planned at ground level - for example as a paved path framed by curbstones. Reddish clinker bricks and other paving stones are equally suitable for both purposes: you can lay them out as a narrow band or embed them upright in the ground. Higher stone palisades are particularly interesting for sloped beds, with which differences in height can be compensated for. Bed borders can also be created as a low wall, either made of concrete or bricks or as a dry wall made of natural stone.
How to Build a Low Drywall
Whatever solution you choose: with a stone bed border, a foundation is usually necessary. For low walls, however, it is sufficient to dig a shallow trench, fill it with sand, gravel and gravel and then shake it down well. Only higher walls and slope fortifications require a concrete foundation. A border made of natural stones of different sizes, for example field stones that you collect yourself, looks very attractive as a bed border. You stack these on the solidified sand foundation so that the differently shaped stones fit into each other and do not wobble. Gravel and potting soil fill smaller gaps and provide more stability. The advantage of such a wall is that you can also plant it, for example with small perennial plants such as stonecrop, etc.ä. The wall does not have to be particularly high, just a few centimeters is enough. If it gets too high, it may rob the plants in the bed of valuable light.
Tip
Flower borders can be fenced not only with stone, but also with other materials such as metal rails, woven willow fences or living plants.
