Every stream is fed from a source, which of course also applies to artificially created streams in the garden. Here the actual source consists of a water hose through which the water is transported using a pump. However, since a piece of hose is not a particularly pretty sight, you can hide it - for example in a source stone.
How can I build a source stone for a stream myself?
To build a source stone for a stream yourself, you need a suitable stone, a stone drill, a water hose, a pump and a water basin. Drill the stone and connect it to the water supply in the basin to start the stream.
Material
You can buy pre-drilled source stones in any supermarket. However, if you took a nice boulder or something similar with you from your last walk, then that can also be used. Most field stones are made from a type of granite that is particularly durable and therefore perfect for this purpose. Instead of a single large stone, you can also stack many stones on top of each other - and let the spring water flow down them like a cascade.
Drilling and inserting source stone
If you decide on the stone cascade, stack the stones to form a stable hill, through the middle of which the spring hose runs upwards and transports the water to the desired exit location. On the other hand, you have to drill a solitaire completely through, although the drill hole needs a slightly larger diameter than the water hose. You can do this yourself using a special stone drill (€29.00 on Amazon) on a hammer drill (or concrete stone drill), but you can also have it done by a stonemason you trust. The latter variant is the safest, because such a stone can break if drilled incorrectly.
Connect source stone with water supply
The source stone is best placed in a water basin, which forms the starting point for the stream. The best way to design this pool is as follows:
- Dig a pit.
- Place the basin (e.g. a plastic pool) in there.
- Cover it with a suitable cover or grille.
- Place the source stone on it.
- Install the water hose and the electrical installation.
- Cover the grid above the basin, for example with additional stones and/or various plants.
- Connect the source stone with the stream.
- Make sure the water actually flows in the direction you want.
Depending on the weight of the source stone, you must place it securely on fence posts, impact foundations or on several bricks.
Tip
A spring stone can also be installed as a decorative element without a stream or pond. In this case, hide the pump in the water basin below the stone. This variant is ideal for the terrace, for example.
